She broke down the walls of the music business in her roles as a performer, singer and designer. She was the first Mexican American artist that was modern and traditional. She united both worlds and helped bring Tejano music to the forefront. It was her sudden death that destroyed her profile. That's what happens to a lot of stars who die far too young. Her fans have worked even more to not forget what she's accomplished. The tragic shooting death of Tejano singer Selena caused a resurgence within the Latino community which can be thought of as similar to the responses to the deaths of Elvis Presley and John Lennon. An enormously popular singer in Latino communities across North America her music crossed borders of culture to impact people young and old alike. Selena was a hot and flamboyant stage performer who was sometimes referred to by her as the Latina Madonna. On stage, Selena was an excellent role model since she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigns.
